Is roof rejuvenation worth it?
Short answer
It's worth it when your shingles qualify, because you spend a fraction of a replacement to keep a functioning roof working for several more years. It's not worth it when the roof is already failing — then you're paying to postpone a tear-off you still have to buy.
The math homeowners should actually run
Compare cost per year of roof life, not sticker price. If a replacement quote is a large five-figure number for a roof expected to last decades, and rejuvenation is a small fraction of that for several added years on a roof you already own, the per-year cost of rejuvenation is usually far lower — provided the roof genuinely qualifies.
There is also a timing value that doesn't show up in a spreadsheet. Deferring a large capital expense by several years lets you replace on your schedule, with quotes you had time to compare, rather than in February after a leak.
When it isn't worth it
- The roof is leaking or the deck is compromised — fix the real problem
- You are selling in a few months and buyers are demanding a new roof
- The shingles are past the point where flexibility can be restored
- There are two layers on the roof, which usually forces a tear-off anyway
The question to ask any company
Ask what specifically about your shingles makes them a good candidate, and ask for it in writing. A company that can only answer in generalities about the product hasn't looked closely enough at your roof to be making a recommendation.
