Why are my shingles curling?
Short answer
Curling means the shingle has lost flexibility and is no longer lying flat — usually from age and dried-out asphalt, often accelerated by an under-ventilated attic. Mild curling on an otherwise intact roof can still qualify for rejuvenation; hard, brittle curling that cracks when flexed does not.
Cupping and clawing
Cupping is when the edges lift and the center stays down, typically from heat and moisture driving the shingle from below — an attic ventilation problem as much as a shingle problem. Clawing is the reverse: the center lifts while the edges stay put, generally an aging and moisture-cycling issue.
Why it matters in Maine
A lifted shingle edge is an opening for wind-driven rain and for ice to work underneath. In a climate with ice dams and February wind off the water, curling turns into leaking sooner than it would inland or south of here.
Fix the cause, not just the symptom
- Check attic intake and ridge ventilation — curling is often a symptom
- Address any bathroom or dryer venting dumping into the attic
- Have the roof assessed for flexibility before deciding on treatment
