Should I pressure wash my roof?
Short answer
No. Pressure washing blasts the protective granules off asphalt shingles and drives water up under the courses, which can take years off the roof and void warranties. Soft washing with an appropriate low-pressure cleaning solution is the correct method.
What the pressure actually does
The granules are embedded in asphalt that has already softened with age. A pressure washer removes them in sheets, leaving exposed mat that degrades under UV. The damage often isn't obvious the day of — it shows up as accelerated aging over the following seasons.
Soft washing instead
- Low pressure, appropriate cleaning solution, adequate dwell time
- Downward application so water isn't forced under shingle courses
- Landscaping protected and rinsed
- Regrowth prevention rather than repeat aggressive cleaning
If someone quotes you a roof pressure wash
Ask what pressure they'll use and what happens to your granules. A contractor who works on shingle roofs regularly will already be talking about soft washing.
