How do Maine winters affect asphalt shingles?
Short answer
Maine roofs cycle above and below freezing dozens of times each winter, and every cycle asks a stiffening shingle to expand and contract. That cycling, plus ice damming at the eaves and wind-driven snow, is why Southern Maine roofs typically wear out years before their printed warranty.
Freeze-thaw is the main event
A flexible shingle absorbs thermal movement without complaint. A dried-out shingle can't, so the movement shows up as micro-cracking that turns into visible cracking, then into a water path. Coastal Southern Maine is especially hard on roofs because temperatures hover near freezing rather than staying cold.
